Chaffey Student FAQ's for Online Proctoring Using Proctorio

Chaffey College is committed to academic integrity of fully online and hybrid courses. To uphold academic integrity during the online component of each course, Chaffey College has given instructors the option for Canvas exams to require online proctoring. Proctorio has been chosen as the official online proctoring provider for such exams. The following are commonly asked questions from students specific to online proctoring.

What is Proctorio?

Proctorio enables faculty to deploy automated, online proctoring for tests administered through Canvas. It incorporates a broad range of features designed to support academic integrity. Depending on the settings your instructor has chosen, Proctorio has the ability to record your testing environment, your screen, or other actions during the exam session.

How do I prepare to take a proctored exam?

Reserve a quiet and private space
- Determine a location and time where you can participate in an exam without distractions.
You need to use a computer (Windows/Mac desktop computer or laptop)
- You cannot take the exams from mobile devices (e.g., iPhone, iPad, Android device, etc).You also need need a working webcam and microphone (depending on the options your instructor has selected).
You must use the Google Chrome web browser & the Proctorio Extension
- Install the Proctorio extension for Google Chrome. It takes less than 30 seconds. The exam that requires Proctorio will usually prompt you to install the extension if you need it.
Have a photo ID card available
- Depending on the settings your instructor has used for the exam you may be asked to hold up your ID to document you are the test taker.
Be ready for room scans
- Again, depending on the settings on your exam, Proctorio may ask you to do a room scan: turning your web camera in a 360 degree pan to look at the room. Proctorio may ask more than once if the program hears noises - the application is trying to ensure there is nobody else in the room.

How does Proctorio work?

Proctorio requires the use of the Google Chrome web browser and you must use/install the Proctorio extension as well (see “How do I prepare?”). Proctorio is active when you log in to the exam and is deactivated when you log out. During the exam, a system of computers captures your movements and sends your video and other data to your instructor for review. Proctorio will flag activity that might not be allowed. Your instructor will then be able to review the video and data to decide if any action is necessary.

Is online proctoring required for all online exams?

No. Online proctoring for exams is an option that your instructor may or may not require for course exams. If the instructor has enabled Proctorio for an exam, then it is required of all students for that exam.

How do I know if my online exam will require proctoring?

If you have an online exam that requires proctoring via Proctorio, a notification will be provided within your syllabus. Additionally, prior to the exam you will be provided with instructions and a confirmation that the online exam will be proctored.

How is my privacy protected?

Proctorio does not employ the use of facial recognition, biometrics, or external human based proctors to monitor the student while they take the exam. Proctorio is FERPA Compliant and does not and cannot collect any unencrypted personally identifying information on any user for third-party use.

Review of recorded material

The information Proctorio collects depends upon how the instructor sets up the online proctored exam. The system generates an interactive report for the instructor, flagging moments of potential interest for faculty review. Recordings will only be reviewed if the student has surpassed a certain threshold set by the instructor. Only the instructor of the course and authorized staff will have access to the information collected by Proctorio.

What about accessibility and those students with special needs?

Proctorio is VPAT certified, 508 compliant, and fully accessible to those with special needs. Students with special accommodations should contact the Office of Student Disability Services to help identify what supports they can provide for online proctoring.

What if I have a technical problem?

Check to make sure that you are using the Chrome browser and have the proper extension installed.
