Welcome BUS 10 students! I am glad you are here. This syllabus will serve as your road map to the class. Please read it carefully and feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I look forward to working with you over the coming weeks!

Course Description:

Survey in business providing a multidisciplinary examination of how culture, society, economic systems, legal, international, political, financial institutions, and human behavior interact to affect a business organization’s policy and practices within the U.S. and a global society. Demonstrates how these influences impact the primary areas of business including: organizational structure and design; leader- ship, human resource management, organized labor practices; marketing; organizational communication; technology; entrepreneurship; legal, accounting, financial practices; the stock and securities market; and therefore affect a business’ ability to achieve its organizational goals.

*VERY IMPORTANT* “CHECK IN” on the first day of class or you will be DROPPED- The school requires instructors to drop “No-Show” students who do not “Check-In” and give their seats to waiting students.  To check in, go to the first week, June 24.  Click on “Check-In.” Follow instructions to add a new discussion topic to forum.

Course Requirements:

In order to take this course, you must:

  1. Have access to a computer and use type written for all assessments.
  2. Have continuous broadband internet access.
  3. Have the ability/permission to install plug-ins or software (e.g. Adobe Reader or Flash)
  4. Have the ability to download and save files and documents to a computer.
  5. Have the ability to open Microsoft files and documents (.doc, .ppt, .xls, etc.)
  6. Have competency in the English language.
  7. Have an email address & access to high speed internet.

Course Necessities: 

  1. Have class textbook and use it for the assessments. 
  2. Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe PDF creator.
  3. Read all of the chapters. 
  4. Complete the Quizzes.
  5. Complete the Assignments.
  6. Participate in the Class Discussions.
  7. Submit your work on time.    

Course Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of BUS 10 (grade "C" or better), students should be able to:

  1. Comprehend, analyze, and respond appropriately to oral, written, and visual information.
  2. Effectively communicate/express both qualitative and quantitative information through oral, written, visual, and other appropriate modes of communication/expression.
  3. Ask questions and utilize appropriate resources to continually expand comprehension and oral, written, and visual communication skills.
  4. Students shall demonstrate a working knowledge of the functional areas of business encompassed under their degree or certificate program.
  5. Students shall demonstrate a working knowledge of the functional areas of business.
  6. Students shall develop an understanding of the social and ethical responsibilities of businesses and business persons.
  7. Students shall develop the ability to recognize an ethical dilemma and make the most appropriate response.
  8. Students shall demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
